Top 10 Things To Know About Cruising

I recently went on a 7 night cruise to Haiti, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Mexico. While on the cruise I learned a lot about what can and cannot be done, ways to save money and things to do to make sure you have a great time. I have listed the top 10 things below:

  1. Make sure you use an involved travel agent that will inform you have special outfits you might need, activities on the ship and works to get the best discounts and credits possible for your group.
  2. If you enjoy alcoholic beverages this can easily be brought on board in water bottles lol. Yes may be viewed as bad advice, however, it works and it will save you tons of money when you are racking up charges on your sea pass card.
  3. If you can afford it pay the extra money for the room with a window. Being trapped in a room the size of a closet with no view of the outside world or whether it is night or day can start to get to you on day 4 of cruising. If you are really not concerned with the money go all out and get a balcony where you can sit and view the beautiful scenery that will be surrounding you each and every day.
  4. If you love shore excursions never book with the actual cruise company. You can have just as much fun for almost half the price by booking with an outside excursion company or finding someone in the area of the destination that is offering things cheaper such as parasailing, jet skis or kayaking.
  5. Actually attend some of the onboard activities. The cruise line will provide you with an agenda and some of the activities will give you several stories to tell. I would definitely recommend going to game shows, dance parties, comedy shows, and any specialty shows.
  6. Make friends with the wait staff because they will treat you the way you should be treated along with added bonuses. Our servers at dinner made sure we got everything we asked for and more whether it was cheese bread or multiple meals at dinner. Also the person making drinks for us poolside made sure all our drinks were topped off with the finest of rum for the super low low price 🙂
  7. Make sure you don’t forget any necessary supplies at home when you are on a cruise. The items I speak of are deodorant, lotion, toothpaste etc. On the ship these items are priced 3x as much as they would be in a regular store.
  8. Bring water shoes because you will definitely need them at all the beaches you will be going to. I happened to step on a sea urchin and it was not a good experience. If I had some water shoes this would have never happened and I wouldn’t have been going through the struggle on day 2 of the cruise.
  9. If you are going with a large group take some walkie talkies or something that will help you communicate and find people. It is basically impossible to find anyone on a cruise ship without knowing their normal routine hangout places.  We wasted several hours just trying to find people in our group on the cruise ship.
  10. Have Fun. Actually go places, plan events and spend some quality time with the people you are traveling with. I mean you are on vacation right 🙂
